Folktales, Futuristic Visions and Soviet Specters: Genre Cinema in the Baltics

Despite their limited output, the genre cinema of the Baltics offers a compelling glimpse into the region’s cultural landscape. This lecture will explore these rare cinematic gems and the stories behind them, showcasing a blend of folklore, history, and captivating narratives that reflect the complex realities of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. From Soviet-era “red westerns” and post-communist anxieties to local mythologies and futuristic visions, these films offer a window into the Baltic experience. We will uncover hidden cinematic treasures and gain a deeper understanding of how genre cinema can both entertain and illuminate a region’s unique identity.

Karolis Žukas is a film programmer based in Vilnius, Lithuania. He is the programmer of the Vilnius International Film Festival, the founder of the horror, fantasy, and cult film festival „Mondo Bizarro”, and the curator of video art and artists’ film festival „Videograms”.
